My Charity Route Pulls vs. Commission Route Pulls

T BIRD

Recommended Posts

It's been very interesting for me the past six weeks as I service my old charity routes versus the new commission routes I have recently purchased.  My business is basically half charity and the other half commission now.  I have started to weed out the bad performers on the charity side and remove those machines.  That's gonna be a slow process as I move forward.  I am also finding it difficult to make that decision to remove equipment at a few locations because I have acquired a nice relationship with those respective locations.  But I have to work thru that and those feelings for the sake of T Bird Vending. The other side of poor producers on the charity side are the really good spots that are making over $50 per month with two machines on a stand.  Yesterday for example, I serviced my nursing school cafeteria and the kitchen at Olive Garden.  I pulled $211 out of them combined.  They each have two machines on a stand.  Its great not to have to give back 30% there.....lol.  And obviously there are others that produce very well also. But as busy as I have been now, I really have to work on getting rid of the poor performers as I move forward.

On the commission side, I am enjoying meeting the owners of these Mom and Pop businesses. There are some locations that need re conditioning of equipment especially because they are such good spots and make I pull good money from them.  The numbers at some of these spots make me smile.  All of my racks are either 3 machines or 5 machines.  I have one location with 7 machines on that rack.  But you know giving back 25% - 35% brings those numbers down....... :(.  I have one location with 5 machines that I give 40% to.  My scale could not handle the amount of quarters this pizza spot produces.  What a location.  I gotta work at keeping these folks happy.  Thats for sure.  Its funny, the charity spots I put together have much better machinery than the commission spots in terms of age of the equipment.  But I can see clearly that NW and Oak machinery last forever with a little maintenance.  The triple Vendstars make me shake my head as I service the few of those that I have acquired on the charity side.  But then again, they are making money so thats a good thing for sure.

All in all I am seeing that I have an exceptional charity route in terms of how much money they bring in.  And the 15% I give to NCCS is certainly a more manageable amount than the commissions I give.  The reality is my charity locations will not last forever compared to these commission spots.  It seems all vendors, including me obviously, start with charity and then branch off into commission.  All of this makes sense to me now.  But even the best and most successful vendors that have worked this business know and have experienced that charity locations are temporary and do not last in the long run.  The commission spots I have bought ?  Most of them belonged to Folz Vending .  So the longevity of these locations speaks volumes.

I am one step away from completing the expansion I want and then simply managing the business.  The issue for me is money and affording the rest of what is available to me. I know I said previously that I wanted to keep things quiet in terms of detail at how and what I was doing.  Oh well.  ;)

Always a pleasure and an inspiration.  Great game last night!  Most runs ever scored in a Yankees/Red Sox game!  Previous record was 29 back in 1903.

Thank you Mr. Whaletail man........I appreciate the comment.  :)

replacing poor performers is one thing, but I have to ask.

1: why are you using NCCS as if you are obligated to use them...my suggestion is go to

vista print, get some labels made up saying a portion of these proceeds to xyz charity, then

give a small portion to a charity. Is nccs helping you placing machines? if not, I think

15% is to higher per machine...when i saw that NCCS forces you to pay for labels, well,

that was an instant turn off for me...my mother died of brain cancer, so I am happy

to put on my label that says, a portion of these proeeds goes to women's cancer...

then send them a check each month..no one says you have to be obligated to

use NCCS. be creative, print your own charity labels, then contribute...

2: It seems like you are paying an absurd amount of money to place a rack..if you have

to pay 40% for a rack, and you still got to pay to fill it all up..you can not possibly

making that much from that location. I would be going after locations where where

I did not have to pay a prem fee, unless it was my very last option...instead of paying

comm, use the charity route, and give a small % to charity...I think you are taking

a hit giving 15% to charity, and up to 40% on commissions...that will affect your

bottom line, you could be using that extra money to get more machines on the street.

The thing about John is he's been here for a long time. He's taken the time to read probably every post here on the board. He's made mistakes and learned from them. He has come a long way since he started and he is doing things closer to "right" than 90% of us, myself included.

To John, it's more about ensuring that his charity route actually benefits the charity. By choice, he gives more to the NCCS than they require of him. There are many vendors out there looking to benefit themselves at the expense of the charity and some, like John, who actually care.

Charity vending is not supposed to be a "cheaper" method to acquire and keep locations. Those who think it is give the rest of us a bad name.

Way to go there T-Bird!  You are going down the same path I went down.  Charity and commission are both effective ways to get in to places.  Both are important to me and I continue to grow both sides.  As you said, commission spots tend to be more stable and charity has about a 20% eviction rate per year due to ownership changes.  I want to saturate this town as much as possible and not go to other towns 100 miles away.  So I have to simply take what I can get.  I would love to cherry pick certain types of accounts, but other vendors have already picked them.  Yea, charity AND commission and some shootin hoops to spice thing up!  I hope you are getting some hoops next to those racks.  Don't be afraid to try superballs in them either - some kids LOVE playing that game with superballs!  Keep on truckin!

You mean like the business owner that asked the vendor if 100% is going to charity, and the vendor

said yes so he could get in there...that is giving vendors a bad name, I know some people on here

want to act like an golpher, so be it., busness is business, I am just giving examples on saving costs...

if he wants to give 15% to charity, and pay high commissions, so be it...this method is not really

controlling costs..
