Mettle
I have found a used 5-head Northwestern bulk rack with a 2 column sticker machine for $300 and it can be delivered and set up for me! I don't have the $$$ or location right now but WOW, I think it is a steal. The seller said he would build ANY custom configuration for me so if you were a buyer what configuration would you get? 3-head candy dispensers, 2 capsules, and the 2 column sticker machine sounds like a great combo to me. They all look like they have extra capacity heads also. In this configuration how much do you anticipate product would cost to fill it up? Lets say it would be filled with (2) 2" toy capsules, (1) 1" gumballs, the stickers, and the rest candy. I know this is a general question but a ballpark figure would suffice. This sounds like a great deal, and I talked to the seller, he sounds FANTASTIC, with tons of knowledge - and is generous with it, but without a location that would bring in lots of foot traffic, it could be a lot of $$$ wasted. Any thoughts?
dsimms
I would suppose it is not wasted money if you are actively looking for places to put your rack...If you do not have a rack for immediate placement when you get an OK, what is the point.. they may call someone else before your ordered rack comes in.. got to be ready to roll...If you are not looking for rack space, then I would not buy it... Mettle
I will keep that in mind but the lure of those racks and the money that can be made is pretty strong. On a whim I asked the local Quickie mart if I could place a triple VS there and the owner said sure without even pausing....this place could have potential for a rack... Thanks dsimms
BluePlate
Ok, this has worked for me in the past. Ask the seller if he knows of any locations that could use this rack. If he does not, try placing it before buying it. Go to the rack owner and tell him you will pay $350 for the rack if you could give him 50% fo your sales until the rack is paid for. Tell him he will know where the machine is at all times and he will own the machine until it's paid for. You can tell him you guarantee the rack will be paid for in 6 months. Of course, never over promise and never default no matter what. This WILL open more doors down the road.
Mettle
That is a good idea Blue, I will think about it. When I talked to the seller he was super easy to get along with, I have no doubts that he will at least entertain that idea. This Quickie mart that just accepted a VS 3000 (but I have yet to place) seems to be a decent spot, as I see kids hanging out on its sidewalk frequently. It probably helps that I just bought $340 ($5 from 68 co-workers) worth of Powerball tix there recently. The owner likes when you are also a customer! He might accept a rack readily, as I will tell him that he can make some decent money for space he isn't even using. Also, I doubt that he would be shopping around for gumball racks if I raise the question, but you never know. When I place the VS 3000 I will show him a picture of the rack and ask if its OK to put that in the store. I am beginning to think that self locating is actually kind of entertaining, of course I'm having a some success, but with very little effort! dsimms
You are not planning on putting the VS on the outside are you? that would be good as gone, or destroyed...
Mettle
The owner said I could place it anywhere I want *inside* the store. I would never place a machine outside. Sorry if I made it seem like I was going to put it outside the store. Kids go in to buy soda, candy, sandwhiches, etc.. then hang out on the sidewalk for awhile. I would never think a convt store would let a machine in..after all, he may loose sales due to your machine... If it was a store I ran, it would be a conflict of interest, unless the machine belonged to the store...
Mettle
I was totally ready for that answer, but he said no problem bring it in. Of course I offered 20% commission so he will be getting paid. I also told him I will be coming to his store in the future to buy lottery tickets (we caught the lottery bug at my full time job) so maybe that has something to do with his allowing me to place a machine there. For all you new vendors try going into stores that you shop at regularly, the shop owners might be a little more inclined to let you place a machine there, it is just good business practice. I will update this issue before and after placement - you are making me think that this Quickie mart might not be that great of a location. dsimms
well you are placing a machine in store already full of candy... you will not know until you at least try..who knows, might get lucky and make $10/20 month...someone might be heading out of the store and think, I might get me a hand full of candy... instead of paying .80c for a pack... Mettle
I really have nothing to lose. I don't have any expectations for this convenience store but I'm going to give it a shot. Its right down the street from me so I can service it whenever I want. $10/20 a month would be OK by me!

I placed one yesterday, really convt for me...on my way to check the mail...then I placed one downtown today..even on sat, street parking was impossble...I jumped out and told wife to drive around the block while i ran in with the machine...and I will only service it on saturdays, as weekdays are hell downtown...I never want another downtown location...with an exception..it has to be some type of upscale with lots of traffic...
