Adventures in Vending

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just thought it might be kind of interesting to swap some war stories about our vending experiences, good, bad, funny or sad.

Here is one of mine.

It was about 10 years ago, Jan 2000, and I was filling a machine at a location in one of the not so good parts of town if you know what I mean. A lady approached me and said that she thought that there was someone outside messing with my van. I quickly closed the machine and ran outside to find a young man about to break into my van through the drivers side window. I yelled at him and he turned to face me with a long handled screwdriver in his hand. I yelled back to the lady who was at the door to call the police. This guy and I proceeded to warily circle each other about 10 ft apart like fighters in the ring, each trying to figure out what to do next. Well all of sudden a couple of fellas driving down the street saw what they thought was a fight, stopped their vehicle in the middle of the street, jumped out and ran over to see what was happening. I told them this kid was trying to break into my truck. They then assisted me in disarming and detaining the kid. Actually they did most of the work and they beat the crap out of him for good measure. Then one sat on his head and the other on his legs while we waited for the cops to show up.

Now for the best part, when the cops showed up the second one to arrive came over to where we were and said, "Jesse I told you that one of these days something like this would happen to you. I hope you learned your lesson."

It's been ten years and I still laugh when I think about that cops comments to this kid who turned out to be 16 and had been arrested over a dozen times already.

None of my vending experiences in my short 5 months could come close to that so I am not even going to try!  What were you going to do if the kid actually came at you with the screwdriver before anyone showed up?

Concealed carry. Explore it. You are a fool if you carry cash and don't protect yourself in this day and age. And NO "Giving them the money" is NOT an option! They just go ahead and hurt you anyway, most of the time.

I will NOT be a victim. Period.

Its funny you mention that because I applied for my carry concealed just the other day. I was robbed at knife point 2 times since I have started vending in the last 4 years and once my truck was broken into while I was in a location, they thought they would steal the money and that's why they broke the passenger side window. Only if they idiots had a brain they would have realized I am not dumb enough to carry money in the cab of the truck, I throw the money bags in empty 12 packs in the trash bin I have on my truck. If you are currently carrying money in the cab of your truck STOP its a terrible idea, hide it in your trash because its the last place anybody would ever look.

I got my carry license as soon as it was legal to do so in Texas. I've got a really sweet Walther .40 for carry and a .45 in the back of the truck, just in case.  :o

Other than this one incident I've never had anyone actually try to rob me. I did have a truck stolen from in front of the warehouse over a long weekend in August of 2005.

To get CHL in Texas,

Submit complete fingerprint set, Pass criminal background check, 10 hours classroom to learn how when and where you can legally blow people away ;D, 50 rounds qualifying at the local range and yer done. 6-8 weeks to get license in the mail after all paperwork submitted.

My truck got broke into four years ago. they smashed out the driver side window and screwed up my door. Cost me $400.00 to get it fixed and they got about $100.00 in loose change. Now I do not carry anything in the front of the truck. I leave the doors unlocked and in the summer time I even leave the windows down so anybody can see that there is nothing in it without breaking something. Alot of my accounts are fenced in comercial property that allows me to put my truck right up to the buildings so I can be a little more brave with it. I put my money bags in the bottom of my chip or candy bins and they go into the building with me. I have a short heavy steel jack handle in a holder on the handle of my cart and two more laying on shelves in the back of my truck. Someday somebody may get my money but they have to earn it.
