Whats up with skittles??

I started this little business a little over a year ago. When I started filling my machines after reading this forum for awhile my shopping list had a lot of common items on it....rp,pmm,mm,mi,ht,....sk's.  Well in the beginning skittles did alright, anymore though, I can't seem to move them at all. Not sure what happened. Has anyone else had issues with being able to sell skittles lately? Did the fda or health dept say something bad about them?

If you have been selling them for a year and have repeat customers, that may be the reason why. People get tired of the same product. That's what's so great about this business. It never gets boring.

I had an account where they got tired of PMMs. Changed it to RPs and they are selling just as well. Try changing the product to something else. Skittles only does average for me.

I have found that Skittles are for kids and young adults under 25.  I also have noticed that they are melting and clumping more than before.  Not sure if the Mars Company changed the formula or if more businesses are simply turning down their A/C to save some money in this crappy economy.  I actually have seen a resurgence in this product and sell more than I ever have.  Also make sure you are offering a fair quantity!  For kids, I set it at the lowest setting - 10 to 12 pieces.  But for adults, I set at at the 2nd lowest setting - 12 to 14 prices.  Some adults will complain if they only get 10 and may stop buying.

You crack me up Jax. Setting it extra small for kids. Are these just rack locations. I find around here there is a great deal of competition. I wish I could get away with a small vend, but it feels like I'm always finding another 8 way terminator set to give 14 MMP. I consider just buying all of his MMP since it is a similar price and revending them in my machine... as long as his was out I'd have the customers.

At first I was going to suggest a regional preference, but you said that sk were selling well at first. Maybe you had big sk fans working at those locations and they don't work there anymore. There may be something to changing out the selections this is especially true for toys. I however rarely change the candy selections and the sales keep up at the same rate. Skittles are a big seller for me. Skittles are a younger candy where MI PMM and Ht tickle the adults fancy.

Has anybody been able to find RP's at Sams?  I haven't seen Sams carry them for several months now.  Those were my biggest selling candy, and now I can't get them.  I can get small 15oz bags at the local walmart grocery but I can't get them in the 45oz bags anywhere.

Skittles sell great here..

Heck I have a factory here that has 4 - 4 selection uturns (skittles, gumballs, mm plain, and reese pieces) and I just serviced today after a week and all the skittles were almost gone in all 4 machines..

Be careful, if the others see that you are having success with u-turns, they will treat you like a step child.  They will hate you a go out of thier way to point out you do not know what you are doing.

I don't hate uturns either.  After all, I still have about 50 on location.  But what I do hate is offering 4 selections and only 2 products actually sell and the other 2 have to eventually be thrown away.  I have many break rooms where the people only buy 2 products.  Many of those have been "right sized" to NW doubles.  I have never had a location where 8 candies would all sell and so for me those 8-selects are complete overkill and waste of product unless you can mix toys in with them.

If you have found a niche with uturns, then great.  I still have a couple of nice niches with the 4-selects moving all products and will keep them on location for a long time.  But you will need an alternative machine when only 1 or 2 products move.  I have sold off about 40 uturns this year for that reason.

They still have them at my Sams...

And Skittles continue to do good for me as well...

Here in Australia i run a reasonable amount of uturns and skittles are a consistently good seller, they are my number 2 after M& M Choc.

The biggest pain i find with skittles is that they are no good where theres heat and no airconditioning as they tend to clump and go soft.
