mojosop
Any one have any suggestions what I might do with a kiosk that is set-up to display and sell candy. Looking for ideas as this kiosk has become available and I am already into full line vending and thought it may be a good avenue to turn product. Have college age chidren who can attend it and work it but didn't know if a mall was my only avenue.
JPVendCo.
why do you need anyone to work at it?
G-man422
Mojo, I've seen them in Malls, movie theatres, arcades, and some smaller kiosks/racks in retail stores like Best Buy, Kmart, etc. I would be interested in what the current owner pays in commission. Sometimes malls have exclusive contracts or want very high commission rates.
BluePlate
Mojo, They work in malls fairly well. The problem with the malls it , there are 2 or 3 national companies that exclusively do malls, they are very agressive on pricing and offering the malls other services (photo booths, kiddie rides, massage chairs). A mall will not think twice to boot you on your butt for a better deal. Leases always favor the malls. I am assuming for rent at a mall, you are looking at $500-$600 a location. Meaning if you have 3 kiosk, it'll be $1500-$1800 OR 40%-50% of sales. I have a mall near me that has 4 kiosks and does a gross of $3500-$5500/month. It does seem like to me the college campus and the airport markets are pretty untapped for these.
Mikey B
Not sure about bulk, but I had inquired a mall about full line drink machines for enough floor space to place 6 machines I was looking at $650/month paid in advance for 6 months then 25% commission of gross. I would also have to service the machines during normal mall business hours which I did not like one bit. To say the least I didn't bite. A couple months later I ran into a guy servicing his machines and pretty much had the same deal as I did. He said as soon as his lease was up, he was pulling them. He told me that at the rate things were going, at the end of the 6month lease he would be getting about 2400 to the good, and that didn't even include the price head had paid for the machines to get them in there. He first tried the pricing at $1.50 and all was going good, so he raised it to $2.00 and his profit stayed around the same. So he found a happy medium at $1.75 All I can suggest is to read the fine print!
BluePlate
Malls are a funny place. In another thread I talked about my trials of putting in a skill crane. The crane has done good, a little under expectations, but good. When I signed a lease (1 year) the mall manager told me they have no plans of any other amusement devices. Well mall manager got fired last month. New manager just signed a lease with an arcade! The arcade will be open in 2 weeks. This really ticks me off. philo
Mojo: I've done some work with First Vending of Walled Lake, MI, who run one of the largest mall/movie operations for vending. The way they work, the mall purchase the islands/machines from them. They then service the machines and charge the malls/movie chains a fee for servicing the machines. All the mechs are read using smart phones and print outs downloaded by the mall staff to monitor sales. It was a pretty slick set up and I learned a lot from them. Moral of the story: malls/movie chains are out of my league. Regards, Philo Bloomfield Vending

mission vending
Most of you are talking about the common areas of mall correct? what if one wanted to go into a store just talk store manager or cold call corprate headquarters? Like if I wanted but on in a dillards, spencers, radio shack, pac sun ect ect... Most of the big chains are under a vending management company agreement. If you can find out which one you would probably be better off contacting them. Personally I wouldn't burn a lot of time and effort in this endeavor as the management companies like to do business with as few vendors as possible, that means one vendor per market if possible. Best Vendors works pretty much exclusively with Canteen.
