Big Crash

The Mage

Recommended Posts

Started my computer as I have done every day, and then a short time later the monitor went black.  Tried to reboot it, and it went black before it fully rebooted.  It did this 2 more times, so I gave it time to cool just in case that was the problem.

It looked like it might be a problem with the video card, and when I rebooted it again, Windows logged the crash as starting from a failure in the video card.

Well I replaced the card, but the system was all wonky after that.  Ran virus software, and then ran checkdisk on the hard drive.

It hasn't crashed since the checkdisk, but Firefox wouldn't load.  So after some research tried to create a new profile, and transferred parts of the old profile over, and that seems to have worked.

But now I have no sound.

I think that rather then going through and finding everything that is wrong, I may just buy another computer.  I was already thinking of doing this later in the year, or early next year anyway.

I found a very good deal at Best Buy for an Acer Aspire for $199.  It's about the size of a wii (very tiny), it has no CD/DVD drive but you can connect one externally.  The best part is you can get it with Windows XP.  You can also get it from newegg.com.  If you are in to Linux, you can get a similar pc from newegg.com that has linux loaded instead of windows, and it's only $219.  But it comes with built-in wireless.

I am planning on picking up an ASUS, but the bigger desktop.  (i5)

I am wanting to upgrade my processor, and that requires a different motherboard, which in turn needs a different case.  Plus I believe my power supply is going out.

Also I was planning on moving to Windows 7.  I am currently using the 32 bit software right now, unfortunately.

I have 2 -  ½ Terabyte drives in my system, and have thought of upgrading one of the drives to a 1T.  Don't need that much yet, but it will keep me covered for the next few years.

Based on all that, I don't think  buying out of the box is really that much more then building myself a system, but in much less time.

Well I am in the process of setting up my computer.  Just got all my links moved to the new computer, and that was a pain.

Right now I have the 1.3 terabytes total on my system.

Yes I know that will be plenty, or it seems like plenty right now.  A few years back having a gig seemed like it would take forever to fill up.

I remember the 5¼-inch floppy disks.  140 kilobytes and it held the computer's operating system.

Today Windows 7 requires at least a Gig, preferably 2 or more.

In rebuilding my computer, I found out that the My Documents folder takes up over 8 gigs.

Not sure how much room Warcraft, and the 2 upgrades are going to take up.  And I am going to be MIA when the new Starcraft comes out.  I am wondering how much memory that thing is going to take up.

If I just used my computer for my business, then I know I wouldn't need much.  A 10 year old system could easily handle all my business needs.

But I am at least 50% geek.  (On my Mothers side.)  So I need my toys.  :P

I will just have to come up with some excuse for adding in the 1080P, 21.5 inch wide screen 70,000:1 monitor.
