Sales: Labels VS. No Labels

I'm considering ordering some of Bender's labels because I'm dreading designing them myself.

Which got me thinking - pre-qualifying the customer with a familiar label is a big part of what lures them to buy from your machine.  A lot of money has been put into the Skittles marketing so that when a customer sees the Skittles graphic, they think "Oh, I want that."

Not seeing a label would potentially require the customer to have to look closely at the machine to see exactly what is inside.  It doesn't have the instant eye-catching appeal that a big brand label has.

Right now I don't have labels of any kind in my machines, and I'm thinking that has got to be hurting sales.  My question is "how much does it hurt to not have labels?"

I would think no labels would lead to potential customers either not buying because they don't know what it is, or unhappy customers because they thought it was something else.  I cut out the labels from the bags I get the candy from.

Profits,

Would you walk up to a drink machine with no labels and make a purchase, not knowing what you would get ? It's the same in bulk vending. That red candy looks good in the machine, but is it a sweet treat or is it hot tamales. Good idea to put proper labels on all your machines so the public knows what they are getting. Also, alot of areas in the country require proper labeling on vending machines by city codes. Would sure be a heck of a mess for Redbox DVD vending with no labels.
