I saw this shared on Vending Connection with permission from the original author, The Vending Start Up Kit.  It might help some of the new vendors and maybe some of the old hands too.

**LICENSES / PERMITS**

Licensing is generally handled through your state or local government.

You will need to consult your local telephone directory, or online in the "Government" section for an office that will assist you with a

license or permit. See www.sba.gov/hotlist/license.html

For FREE one-on-one counseling, please go to SBA's home page

(www.sba.gov) and select "Local SBA Resources" for an area local

contact nearest you. SBA- 1(800)U-ASK-SBA. Check with the local City Hall, or local Small Business Association office where your machines are going to be placed. Each state and city has different licensing laws. And each city may have different fees per machine.

1) Ask if you need an occupational license. How much?

2) Do you need to pay for any other license fees?

How much per machine?  (ask if you can pay for a whole county)

3) They also have fees per machine to be paid yearly.

Example: amusement devices in KC, MO. are average $25 per machine per year.

They give you a small sticker to place on the window of each machine.

Some cities have fees for soda and snack machines.  These fees are

to be paid yearly. If considering music vending...call The Jukebox Licensing Office at 800-955-5853.

Business License: No matter where you are, you'll need to secure a business operator's license from your local city's licensing department.  If you live in a state that enforces sales tax, you'll need a seller's permit, and if you sell perishable items (such as food), you'll have to obtain a health or food permit from you county, city or state health department. The cost of a business license and other permits varies according to your location, but can range from $10 to $250. Some states require that food vendors take and pass a food preparation and handling course before being granted a license.
