mandoman
I have been running a non-profit honor box at my work for several years. Someone just implied that I need a license to sell things at wholesale cost. Doesn't make sense to me. I recognize that I am the sheep in the lion's cage here, but can someone give me a straight answer on this? Does it matter what state I am located in? zjtaylor
Yes check your state, county, and city regulations. Who was this person? They may or may not know what they are talking about. Is this your only location? If this is your only one or one of a few and you haven't been caught yet, I would just keep on doing it the same way. Worst case you'll get a slap on the wrist and a small, probably under 50$ fine.
The Mage
I think it might depend on the state and city. The best thing is to go in to the local government office, and talk to somebody face to face. (People are more friendly face to face.) Because I came in and asked, they were very helpful, and understood the situation. I found out I needed to collect tax, but didn't need anything else for a bulk vending machine. The tax came as a surprise as our State doesn't collect tax on food unless it is prepared, or, as I had learned, from a vending machine. Even though you are doing a non-profit, you might be required to pay sales tax.
