Rowe 4900 whole shelf not working

Recommended Posts

I just took over this account. The shelf was bad when I took over and the owner didn't know what was wrong with it. The buisness doesn't seem to care that it's broken either. Now that I've taken over, I want to fix it. I just think it looks bad.

Is there any simple things I could try? I'm new to this buisness so it my first time working on them. I'm a copier tech by trade so it doesn't look to difficult to work on. I'm thinking the connection is bad. I'll be heading there on Saturday to troubleshoot. I have the service manual but on all that I download, it leaves the TS part out. I have error er90 for all slots in that tray. I'm pretty sure it's a dual board set up. I'll have to double check when I go back. Also, does anyone know where the serial tag is located on this machine?

The serial number is riveted to the inside of the cabinet on the lower left by the power switch. ER90 codes are motor errors with the select number showing in the lower 1/2 of the display.

Pull the bad shelf out of the machine. Check that all the shelf rollers (4) are there and secured tightly by nuts. Look at the male connector on the back of the shelf. If any one or more terminals are pushed in appreciably further than the others then that is likely where the bad connection is. If those look fine then take a look at the female connector on the back of the cabinet. Inside each terminal you should see 2 shiny areas on opposing sides of each slot. If any slot has less than 2 shiny spots then it means that the female terminal has been pushed out the back of the connector. This damage is caused by mis-aligned shelves caused by loose or missing rollers.

If you find either terminal problem then you have to move the wires from the bad terminals on each side of the connector (shelf and cabinet) to an unused terminal pair, making sure to move them to opposing terminals. This will change the selection number so refer to the selection and wiring matrix for the new number.

If you need parts for this you can PM me as I still stock them.

As AZ said first fix the shelf rollers and the shelf plugs. Start by remove all the shelves at the same time because even the working shelves will have missing and broken parts. Until you get your face up close to the connectors in the back of the machine no one can tell the damaged ones from the good ones the damage is often subtle.

After you fix the shelf rollers and the shelf plugs, it will be necessary clear the errors by running a motor test each of the selections with an error. Once a motor has successfully completed a test vend the price will revert back to normal. If you look at the price before the test it will be something like 99.50 changing it will not put the selection back in service.

Moving around the wires will work but will make you nuts if you latter decide to rearrange the shelves.

Can't wait to take a look. I'll let you guys know what I find. Hopefully it will help someone else out in the future.

I tried to clear the errors via the button but didn't help. I just found the service manual so I know how to check each motor now.

I did try to set the prices as well. They just zero back out once I try to select them.

Before you pull the connections apart, I would try swapping shelves. Move the shelf which is not working up one level and see if the shelf works there. Then see if the remove d working shelf will work in the spot where the non-working shelf was.

So I went to do a test vend and the buttons fell in... didn't have the correct tool to fix that this time.

I did do a factory reset: turned machine off, held free vend and turned back on. This wipes all prices out and restarts everything. Once I reprogrammed prices the tray was working. I loaded it up.

We will see how it holds up. I put money in and was able to get something from each selection.

Anyone know what size fluorescent bulb goes in here? I thought it was 30 inch but it's smaller. Forgot to bring tape measure. I'm gonna guess and say 28 inch. There wasn't a bulb in it at all when I took over.

Thanks for everyone's help.
