If you grind the carriage bolts off the side theft plate and remove it you should be able to to see the inner door. Then you can use a saw and cut the T bolt. You could also cut the hinge on the top.

Well I finally got this POS back to my shop where I can get serious with it. Only cost me a Hundred and seventy five bucks  and now I've spent the last 4 hours clamping it shut and drilling out the carriage bolts on that infernal hasp. I clamped it so tight the body was denting and still can't get it open. After I got the hasp off I was able to pry the T handle out far enough to spin it but no luck. Next I sawed off the end of the T handle, thinking that maybe it would just slide open but still no luck. Since I don't have any plastic explosives handy I'm currently in the process of prying the anti theft plate out far enough to cut a notch wide enough to get a crow bar between the body and the door. If this golpher didn't have a new VN2512 in it and about a hundred dollars I haul it off to the scrap yard (also has the chill deck in there so that's not an option) We don't even have any lakes around here so I can't make it a mooring anchor. Any good ideas (besides the obvious ones) ?

A guy was breaking into them around here by cutting the top hinge plate and lifting up on the door.

Wow!  This sounds like some kind of total failure of the quicker lock inside the cabinet.  I've never had one of them fail or spin like that without opening before.  It is too bad you hacked off the T-handle because now you don't have much of a way to turn it, though that certainly doesn't sound like it would help anyway.  Good luck with this but it kind of sounds like you're going to have one f'ed up cabinet by the time you get it open.  I know you don't like the Vendos but it's a shame that you won't have a machine to even sell now.

I can assure you that I like them even less at this point - if that was even possible  ;D  ;D  ;D

I would like to avoid destroying it if possible - you never know when some sucker will come along and trade me for a Dixie  ;D  ;D  ;D  At this point I'll try a very small cup bit and see if that won't open it up.

That's a lot of carriage bolts.  I wonder if I can find a replacement theft panel for this.  This machine is actually a 570 which is exactly like the 511 just a little taller.

I hope your making a youtube video of this....  ;D  ;D  ;D

Can you see inside the t handle now? The housing is only a soft white metal. Inside the t handle you should be able to see the actual bolt mechanism. This bolt should have a pin going sideways through it. That should be the only thing holding the door closed at this point. You could either try drilling the locking bolt so the pin comes out (preferred) or drilling around the bolt into the softer white metal until it falls apart.

Yes Bill, at this point I can see exactly what you're describing and I'm thinking If I can find a 1/2" cup bit I could just drill the whole mechanism out which is no loss at this point as the whole works will need replacing once I get it open.  This is part of the reason I hacked off the T handle.

I had one once where the T- handle came out but the bolt stayed in. The pin had broken off. I found a cheap socket and drove it over the end of the bolt and ratcheted it out.

Unfortunately Roger, the pin seems to be the only thing that's still working in this POS  ;D  ;D  ;D

Can you cut a notch in a socket to fit over pin?

I could do that but I'll bet that pin wouldn't allow the bolt to turn if it's still in there.

Apparently cup bits only go down to 3/4" and it's so deep in there I can't get a standard drill bit to work either.  The sawsall is looking better and better

Did you ever get that door open?

Not yet.  I was able to cut the security panel easy enough to expose the rod I'm trying to cut but a normal sawsall blade won't even scratch it - might as well been using the backside of the blade.  I'm waiting on some carbide blades I ordered online.

My number is 760-646-0502. You've received a lot of advice, I don't know if I can add anything that would be useful. I can't quite get a clear picture of just what went wrong or what stage of destruction you are at. While you are waiting on the blade you can send me a few pics and I'd be willing to help you work thru it.

I could give a golpher. My number is all over the place anyway. If someone wants to golpher with me they find out I don't play nice.

Me: And why are you calling me?

Them: Uh, I saw your number and thought (blah blah blah).

Me: (click)
